Friday Favorites #6: The Blue Sword

Friday Favorites is a weekly meme hosted here, that spotlights a favorite author, book, series, publisher, cover, blog, etc. Basically whatever bookish thing that you love, recommend, and want to tell others about. Just pick one and link up to my post each Friday to share. You can use the graphic I used above, the other one here, or your own.

Last week, when I was deciding on which books to give away for The Best Book Ever Giveaway Hop, I was looking through my favorites' book shelf and came across The Blue Sword. It's a book I haven't read for a while, but I absolutely love! It prompted me to go look on Amazon to see if I could get a copy. I found a hardcover that I ended up getting and which I included in my Stacking the Shelves post last week. Here is some information about it:

The Blue Sword
(Damar #1)
by Robin McKinley
March 15th 1987 by Ace (first published 1982)

Goodreads summary:
Harry Crewe is an orphan girl who comes to live in Damar, the desert country shared by the Homelanders and the secretive, magical Hillfolk. Her life is quiet and ordinary-until the night she is kidnapped by Corlath, the Hillfolk King, who takes her deep into the desert. She does not know the Hillfolk language; she does not know why she has been chosen. But Corlath does. Harry is to be trained in the arts of war until she is a match for any of his men. Does she have the courage to accept her true fate?

I've read many of Robin McKinley's books, but this one remains my favorite of hers. It has magic, danger, action, romance, intriguing characters, a very strong heroine, and a little bit of a fairy tale plot. Definitely my kind of book! :)

The beginning of this book is fabulous! I was completely sucked in with the setting and the horses and Corlath (who is definitely swoon worthy). Just about gives me chills - good ones. Although, all of it is really fabulous! I need to re-read it and add to my previous review. At least now I have a copy on my shelf to read whenever I want. It is one I would definitely recommend adding to your shelves if it already doesn't have a place there.

About the Author
(from her website)

Robin McKinley is an American writer who has won many awards in the US, including the Newbery Medal for The Hero and the Crown, a Newbery Honor for The Blue Sword, and the Mythopoeic Award for Adult Literature for Sunshine.

She lives in Hampshire, England with her husband, author Peter Dickinson, two hellhounds nicknamed Chaos and Darkness, an 1897 Steinway upright named Rhodanthe, and increasing numbers of rose bushes wedged into three [sic] tiny gardens. The view out her office window is her change-ringing bell tower and in the next village over is a paragon among horses whom Robin is so fortunate as to have permission to ride.
