Friday Favorites #16: Scarlet

Friday Favorites is a weekly meme hosted here, that spotlights a favorite author, book, series, publisher, cover, blog, etc. Basically whatever bookish thing that you love, recommend, and want to tell others about. Just pick one and link up to my post each Friday to share. You can use the graphic I used above, the other one here, or your own.

Last year there were some seriously great YA debuts. One of my favorites, that I later added to my shelves, was this retelling of Robin Hood. I thought it was going to be a stand-alone, but since then have seen that there will be a sequel that will be published in February. *cheers*

(Scarlet #1)

YA Historical Romance

Goodreads Summary:

Many readers know the tale of Robin Hood, but they will be swept away by this new version full of action, secrets, and romance.

Posing as one of Robin Hood’s thieves to avoid the wrath of the evil Thief Taker Lord Gisbourne, Scarlet has kept her identity secret from all of Nottinghamshire. Only the Hood and his band know the truth: the agile thief posing as a whip of a boy is actually a fearless young woman with a secret past. Helping the people of Nottingham outwit the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham could cost Scarlet her life as Gisbourne closes in.

It’s only her fierce loyalty to Robin—whose quick smiles and sharp temper have the rare power to unsettle her—that keeps Scarlet going and makes this fight worth dying for.

Why it is a favorite:

I really love Historical Fiction and especially if it includes some romance, which this book does. The romance isn't the whole story or even half of the story. It kind of creeps in there and presents itself towards the end. This is more of a character and plot-driven book.

There is plenty of suspense and adventure, sword fights, stealing to feed the poor (more themselves), strong friendships, humor, a strong heroine, and possible death. It's just a great book all around. The author did a great job with the language too. It took me a couple chapters to immerse myself in it, but once I did it was smooth reading from there on out.

I feel like this was a gem from last year that some readers missed out on. If you haven't read it, I recommend that you do! :)

About the Author
(from Goodreads)

A.C. Gaughen is shamelessly addicted to staying up far too late (it feels like stealing time), diet coke (it burns so good), Scotland (stupid country stole my heart and won't give it back. Interpol has been ineffective for prosecution) and thieves (so I guess I'm not that mad at Scotland).
