Summary
When the past and the present collide…

Hailey Kent knows how she wants to spend the summer before her junior year in high school: hanging out at the pool with Jenna, her BFF; riding her new trail bike on Vermont’s country roads; and flirting with Jenna’s hot older brother, Cody. 

Hailey’s plans are shattered when a post-graduation accident puts her brother into a coma. Feeling guilty for not stopping him from going out that night, she seeks solace in exploring an old house and its overgrown gardens.

A mysterious correlation of events propels her back in time to the Vietnam War era, where she realizes she can use her knowledge of one boy’s fate to save his life.

But first, Hailey needs to convince him of her sanity.

What inspired this time travel story? - by Mia Grace

I once owned a house built in 1784, and as I sat in its living room, looking at the hand-hewn beams overhead and the gunstock corner posts forming the post-and-beam frame, I couldn’t help but wonder about the people who built it and lived in it 200 years before me. Who were they? What did they hope for when they built that house? What would they think if they could see it two centuries later?

The idea for Correlation came from an old farmhouse that was abandoned when my husband and I found it on a back road in Vermont. Its window glass and doors were gone, its rooms stripped bare of all functional parts—cabinetry, plumbing, fixtures, and so on. It was a hollow shell, empty and forlorn. A porcupine was living in one of the downstairs rooms. The stairs to the second floor were too rickety to support us.

Unlike my old house, this one was no longer loved. But it had been home to somebody—most likely more than one generation. I fantasized about going back some evening and finding it intact, the glow of lamplight coming from its windows, and old-fashioned-looking people inside, visible through antique lace curtains. They’d be gone by daylight, a phantom family from a parallel universe who only lived there by night.

I wanted to find a way to incorporate that house into a story. It moved in and out of my mind over a twenty-year period while other stories took precedence. But I was always thinking about the implications of finding former occupants living there in their own time. And what if I knew something tragic about their future, because their future was the past to me? Would I be able to forewarn them and avert tragedy? Is it possible to change history?

Correlation was born.

Mia Grace lives in rural Vermont and works as a consumer advocate and educator in New Hampshire. When she’s not hiding away in her writer’s garret, she can be found enjoying her boisterous extended family, her menagerie of dogs, cats, and laying hens, and her perennial flower gardens.
