My Review

This is one of those books that is just great to pick up when you need some sweet and entertaining historical romance that you can read quickly. As each story is a novella, it's quite rewarding to read the entire story from start to finish in a single sitting. I just crave these types of stories sometimes. There isn't anyone dying or about to be killed. The world isn't ending. The MC's aren't going to go through serious trials and hardships during the story and maybe never see each other again. No, in these you pretty much know that you are going to read a romance that is short and sweet and has a happy ending.

The compilation includes four stories. The Light Within was a little bit of a different take on a story from that era because the heroine is an American Quaker. I really liked her character though and also that of the hero. They shared some sweet moments.

A Hasty Marriage was quite humorous. I loved how the heroine's story started with her climbing out of her window and down a tree to run away when she is 32-years-old! I also really liked the Captain's daughter, Charity, and the Captain's and Annie's dialogue. It was a rather humorous and romantic story.

Something New has some heartache in it, especially at the beginning as the war has just ended and little Marie has no place to go. I had to laugh at the little French girl's part in the Major's packing of his worn and stained clothing. I loved Audrey and her humor and the candor of John. This was a heartwarming story.

I haven't ever read about a hotel manager in a historical setting that didn't take place in the American West. It was interesting to have a character like that in The Background Man and very fitting to the title. Then there is the bluestocking Miss Carrington. They make quite a pair and an enjoyable story.

All four novellas have either the threat of war or a hero and/or heroine affected by war in some way. I liked that even though these stories are all light, that the author does let in the aging and maturing effect of war upon the individuals in the story. Their perspectives and desires have changed for what they have gone through and what they have feared or do fear. All four stories pretty much have the heroine and hero fall in love fairly quickly, but it didn't bother me like so many other stories like that do. They are short, so things have to happen fairly quickly.

Overall I really enjoyed this compilation! It was fun, sweet, and thoroughly entertaining. If you love Historical Romance then I would definitely recommend it!

Content: This is an Adult title, so there is some subject matter and innuendo that would lean that way (such as mistresses and the marriage bed), but I would still consider this clean.
Source: Publisher, which did not affect my review in any way.
