BLOGOVERSARY: Jennifer E. Smith

Welcome to another feature for my Blogoversary!

If you've missed any of the other Blogoversary posts, you can find the schedule with links to each one here.

Today I'm ecstatic to have one of my favorite YA Contemporary Romance authors, Jennifer E. Smith, stopping by to let me interview her!!! Woop! Woop! You can see my Friday Favorites post about Jennifer here.

I read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight back in 2012 and LOVED it (review here)!  That was when I became a fan and I've been one since. I also read and LOVED This Is What Happy Looks Like last year (review here). Jennifer is contributing a physical ARC of The Geography of You and Me to one lucky person!

Summary

Lucy and Owen meet somewhere between the tenth and eleventh floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they're rescued, they spend a single night together, wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is restored, so is reality. Lucy soon moves to Edinburgh with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father.

Lucy and Owen's relationship plays out across the globe as they stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and -- finally -- a reunion in the city where they first met.

A carefully charted map of a long-distance relationship, Jennifer E. Smith's new novel shows that the center of the world isn't necessarily a place. It can be a person, too.

Interview
with Jennifer E. Smith

1. In the last two books you’ve published as well as your upcoming release, The Geography of You and Me, it seems there is an ongoing theme of your main characters meeting and developing relationships in uncharacteristic ways (i.e. on a plane, over email, and now on an elevator). What inspired you to write these types of stories?

I've always been interested in themes like fate and timing and chance. My characters tend to have a hole in their hearts that only the other can fill, and that spark of connection is especially interesting to explore when it happens somewhere unexpected – when you take two entirely different people who might not have otherwise met, and who don’t even realize yet that they need each other, and put them together at just the right moment.

2. Have you or someone you know ever built a friendship or fallen in love with someone met in a similar way?

I haven’t, actually. Most of mine have had fairly ordinary beginnings. I have a few friends with more interesting stories, but I think the start of every relationship – whether it’s on an airplane or in an elevator or at a coffee shop or on a blind date – depends on those same ingredients of timing and fate. There’s sometimes just as much magic in the ordinary as the extraordinary, don’t you think?

3. With The Geography of You and Me being released in April, would you share with us your favorite place or city that you’ve visited in your travels?

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places over the years. Some of my favorites: South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, Ireland, Prague, Italy…I could go on. But the place that really has a hold on me, the one that has really captured my heart, is Scotland. I lived there for a year while I was in grad school, and I completely fell in love with the country. Some of this book is actually set in Edinburgh, and it was a joy to visit it again through Lucy’s story.

4. Can you give us a hint or a teaser about what you’ll be working on next?

My next book follows two teens on the night before they leave for college. They’ve been together for much of high school, and they’re about to head off to opposite coasts, and they’ve been waffling all summer about whether or not to stay together. They have one night left to decide, so they spend it revisiting all the places that have been significant to their relationship.

5. What are three books you’re looking forward to reading that will be released in 2014?

I was lucky enough to get an early read of WE WERE LIARS by E. Lockhart, which is astonishingly good. I’m also really looking forward to the THE HERE AND NOW by Ann Brashares and NOGGIN by John Corey Whaley. (And many, many more!)
